September 22, 2010 Poll finds tight race for N.Y. governor race

New York’s upstart Republican candidate for governor, Buffalo businessman Carl Paladino, is within striking distance of Democratic candidate Andrew Cuomo, according to a poll released today that once again underscores the volatility of the 2010 election cycle.
The Quinnipiac University poll shows Paladino, aided by a 4 -1 margin of support among Tea Party members, trails Cuomo, the state’s attorney general, 49% to 43% among likely voters.
Paladino trounced former Rep. Rick Lazio, who served in Congress from 1993 to 2001, in last week’s Republican primary. Nonpartisan political observers, including the Cook Political Report and the Rothenberg Political Report rate the seat as safe for Democrats. USA TODAY’s 2010 election map also lists the race as “solid Democrat.”
