McConnell: Reid’s accusations against Romney ‘beneath the dignity of his office’

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell says it’s time for Sen. Harry Reid to stop his repeated “baseless accusations” that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney didn’t pay taxes.

Reid, the Democratic majority leader in the Senate, has cited an anonymous investor from Romney’s former company – Bain Capital – to claim the Republican didn’t pay taxes for 10 years.

“I think the Majority Leader has more important things to do than use the Senate as a forum for his baseless accusations,” McConnell said Thursday in a statement provided to The Daily Caller.

“Frankly, it’s beneath the dignity of his office,” the Republican senator from Kentucky said.

Reid first made the accusations against Romney in a story published by The Huffington Post. ”Now, do I know that that’s true? Well, I’m not certain,” Reid said.

“His poor father must be so embarrassed about his son,” Reid added.

He reiterated those comments to reporters Wednesday and in a Senate floor speech on Thursday.

While Romney’s campaign has released his last two years of tax returns, Democrats have called on Romney to release more returns from past years.

Romney’s campaign has said they’ve released plenty of financial information already and have called Reid’s charges about not paying taxes false.

“I’m telling you authoritatively speaking on the behalf of the governor that those charges are untrue, they are baseless, and there is nothing to back them up,” Romney adviser Eric Fehrnstrom said.
