Rove responds to Pelosi’s threats: She ‘sounds like a mad Red Queen’

Karl Rove, the former senior adviser to President George W. Bush, said Thursday that House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi sounded “like a mad Red Queen” when she claimed she could have “arrested” him “on any given day” when she was the House speaker.

“The only way I could have been arrested is if the House adopted the resolution, which it did not,” Rove said.

“So, it’s nice to know that Speaker Pelosi wanted to have me arrested. It’s nice to know that she thinks she had the power to, but we’re still a nation of laws and she has no authority to do so and had she attempted to arrest on any of the number times that I was in and out of the Capitol, without a resolution passed by the entire House of Representatives, she would have been up the proverbial creek without the proverbial paddle.”

Pelosi was attempting to attack the efforts House oversight committee Chairman Darrell Issa is making to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress over his failure to comply with a congressional subpoena for Operation Fast and Furious documents.

“I could have arrested Karl Rove on any given day,” Pelosi said on Wednesday. “I’m not kidding. There’s a prison here in the Capitol. If we had spotted him in the Capitol, we could have arrested him.”

Rove said Pelosi’s comments were exaggerations meant to shift the political narrative.

“You know, she sounds a little bit like Inspector Clouseau and a little bit [like] the mad Red Queen, but Speaker Pelosi was dead wrong in her assertion today and I’m sure she had a good laugh and it’s nice to know that she dreams of slapping me in her own personal jail,” Rove said. “But she didn’t have any authority to do it.”

Holder is now officially in contempt of the House oversight committee, which voted 23-17 to find him in contempt on Wednesday afternoon after President Barack Obama asserted executive privilege to help Holder conceal documents. House Speaker John Boehner and Majority Leader Eric Cantor have said they plan to bring the contempt resolution to the full House for a floor vote.
